Description

Phra Somdej Wat Bangkhunphrom B.E.2531

History of Creation: Phra Somdej Bang Khun Phrom 2531 This is a highly popular edition from the 1980s in the Phra Somdej Bang Khun Phrom line. Wat Bang Khun Phrom (officially named Wat Mai Amatars, Royal Temple, Bang Khun Phrom sub-district, Bangkok Noi district, Bangkok) created this edition to celebrate royal events and support temple restoration, using sacred powder mixed with materials from the old kru (cache) — the original Phra Somdej from Somdej Toh created in BE 2413, with the major kru opening in BE 2500 — resulting in blessings very close to the authentic kru pieces.

Year of Creation and Significance

  • BE 2531 (commonly called “year 31” in the community) was created during the auspicious occasion of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej (Rama IX) reaching his 5th cycle birthday (60 years) and the Grand Coronation Anniversary celebrating 42 years on the throne. It is regarded as a major national and temple commemorative edition.

Details of Creation

  • Material: Main sacred powder (Pathamang, Itthijae, Maharaj, Phutthakhun, Tri Nisinghe) mixed with broken/old kru powder from the BE 2500 opening (and previous editions like 2509, 2517) + cement, cooked rice, banana, flower pollen, sesame, fragrant oil, etc. The powder is dense and strong but brittle and prone to breakage. Kru residue appears as tofu-like bubbles (minimal black-red stains, genuine kru material).
  • Prints: Created in a total of 13 prints (same as the BE 2517 edition). Notable prints include:
    • Large print (largest and most popular, especially single egg-yolk cut by hand — rare and produced in small quantity)
    • Thread-line print
    • Lotus-bud topknot print
    • Interspersed base print
    • Chedi-shaped print
    • Sanghati print
    • Bodhi canopy print
    • Special print (extra sprinkled old powder, some with “พิเศษ” mark) The full committee set or large set includes 12–13 prints, with very sharp and deep impressions.
  • Back side: Flat, stamped with a chedi symbol + circular text “Wat Mai Amatars” in blue or black ink. Some special prints have additional “พิเศษ” text.
  • Consecration Ceremony: Major Phutthaphisek ritual held at the temple’s ubosot on April 30, BE 2531, led by senior monks including:
    • Phra Sangwora Vimol Thera (To) of Wat Pradu Chimplee
    • Phra Rakkhit Wan Muni (Thira) of Wat Pa Lelai
    • and other masters in the lineage (some sources mention Luang Pho Phae of Wat Pikun Thong participating).
  • Quantity: Fewer than previous editions (especially hand-cut large prints are scarce), but very well-received due to being the 5th-cycle royal commemoration edition.

Notable Blessings Similar to the classic Bang Khun Phrom kru line: extremely strong metta-maha-niyom (great charm and influence, people are drawn to you), protection from danger (invulnerability), wealth, success in business and trade (enhanced by genuine old kru powder).
