The Somdej Mahawasugri of Wat Chinoros, BE 2512 (1969 CE), is a powder amulet created during a major consecration ceremony at Wat Chinorot Sathit Maha Simaram Ratchaworawihan (commonly known as Wat Chinoros), a royal temple of the second class (Worawihan) located along Khlong Mon, Itsaraphap Road, Thonburi side, Bangkok. The temple was established around BE 2379 (1836 CE) during the reign of King Rama III by Somdet Phra Maha Samana Chao Krom Phra Paramānujit Chinorot (when he still held the title Krom Muen Nuchit Chinorot).
Purpose of creation In BE 2512 (1969), the temple held several consecration ceremonies for sacred objects, and that year coincided with five Saturdays (a rare “Saturday five” occurrence), so various amulets were created—powder tablets, medals, statues—to raise funds for the permanent restoration of temple structures.
Key persons involved in the creation
- Phra Palad Manop (assistant abbot at the time, from Buriram, former secretary to Luang Pu Nak of Wat Rakhang, knowledgeable in Wat Rakhang-style Somdej amulets) invited Luang Pu Suk of Wat Pho Sai Thong to participate.
- Phra Maha Prapat Naen Na (from Sankhaburi, Chai Nat) invited Luang Pho Kway of Wat Khosittharam to participate.
- Phra Ajarn Kaeo Mani-ngam.
Consecration ceremony It was a grand Maha Phutthaphisek ceremony held from 22 to 31 August 2512 (1969). Many renowned guru monks joined the blessing, including:
- Luang Pho Phrom, Wat Chong Kae
- Luang Pu To, Wat Pradu Chimphli
- Luang Pho Kway, Wat Khosittharam (personally blessed alone until nearly dawn; records note he “tested” the amulets)
- Luang Pu Suk, Wat Pho Sai Thong
- Ajarn Nam, Wat Don Sala
- Luang Pho Ming, Wat Kok
- Luang Pho Thiang, Wat Muang Chum
- Luang Pho Ngern, Wat Don Yai Hom
- Luang Pho Di, Wat Phra Rup and many other masters from across Thailand.
Characteristics of the amulet
- Powder material (oil powder or general powder); excellent sacred ingredients including old Wat Rakhang Somdej powder, old Phra Kring powder, and various other auspicious substances.
- Available in several molds, such as the large mold (jumbo) approximately 3.5 × 5 cm, and other molds in the same series.
- Considered one of the finest sets from Wat Chinoros in that era; some references and collectors classify it as part of the “Benjapakee” or a powerful heritage piece of the temple during the 2512–2514 period.
This amulet enjoys high popularity in the Thai amulet community due to the grand ceremony, large number of participating masters, and excellent sacred powder—especially among followers of Luang Pho Kway and Luang Pu Suk lines. It is regarded as a good proxy or substitute amulet for those teachers, yet remains more affordable than direct amulets from the masters themselves.
