Somdej Jom Surin Powder Amulet, BE 2513 (1970 CE), Luang Pu Duen, Wat Buraparam

The Somdej Jom Surin (commonly called Somdej Jom Surin) is a first-generation oil-powder amulet created at Wat Buraparam, Surin Province, in BE 2513 (1970 CE). The principal consecrating monk was Luang Pu Duen Atulo (also known as Phra Rattanakorn Wisut), who performed the main empowerment and blessing.

History and purpose of creation This amulet was created as a commemorative item and to raise funds for building a large provincial Buddha statue for Surin Province. The statue was intended to be enshrined on Phu Khao Suai Hill, Mueang District, Surin Province, to serve as a guardian and symbol of prosperity for the province, as well as to inspire faith and morale among Buddhist devotees in Surin. The project was led by Pol. Maj. Gen. Wichian Simantra (the provincial governor at the time). Therefore, this amulet is considered one of the important provincial sacred objects of Surin.

Characteristics of the amulet

  • Material: Oil powder (ผงน้ำมัน powder mixed with oil), yellowish or yellowish-brown color, high-quality powder with dense and firm texture.
  • Main molds: Back with elephant design (Indra riding Airavata elephant or popular elephant-with-tail block), and some molds with a pavilion on Phu Khao Suai hill design (or plain back).
  • Size: Standard Somdej size (not overly large).
  • Created in the same ceremony as the Phra Kring Jom Surin (metal alloy or blackened copper material).

Consecration ceremony It was a grand consecration ceremony (Phutthaphisek). Luang Pu Duen was the main presiding monk who performed the primary empowerment and blessing. Some sources mention that other forest-tradition monks in the lineage of Phra Ajarn Mun (Phra Pa) also participated in the blessing, contributing to the amulet’s reputation for strong protective power (แคล้วคลาด, คงกระพัน), invulnerability, and great charm/mercy (เมตตามหานิยม), especially popular in the Isan region and among Luang Pu Duen devotees.

Current popularity The Somdej Jom Surin powder amulet from BE 2513 is regarded as the first and most prominent batch from Luang Pu Duen of Wat Buraparam. It enjoys high demand among collectors of Isan amulets and devotees of the Phra Ajarn Mun forest tradition due to the grand ceremony, excellent sacred powder, and powerful blessings (particularly the popular elephant-back mold). Rental/bidding prices vary according to condition and mold, ranging from several thousand to low tens of thousands of baht, depending on beauty and authenticity.

This amulet is a classic sacred object of Wat Buraparam and Surin Province, widely regarded as a powerful heritage piece that remains highly sought after in the Thai amulet community.
