Phra Pidta Luang Pu Onn Yanasiri, Wat Pa Nikrotharam, Year 1974 (B.E. 2517), Mekkapat Material
History of Creation The Phra Pidta of Luang Pu Onn Yanasiri of Wat Pa Nikrotharam, Udon Thani Province, created in 1974 (B.E. 2517), is considered one of the most valuable and highly rare sacred objects of the Forest Tradition (the lineage of Luang Pu Mun Bhuridatta). The creation during that era stemmed from the unwavering faith of his disciples, including civil servants, soldiers, police officers, and the general public, who sought a sacred object as a spiritual anchor and protection against dangers. Because during that time (around 1974), Thailand was still facing high tensions along the borders and in conflict “red zones,” the organizing committee requested Luang Pu Onn’s permission to cast this edition of Phra Pidta. The intention behind its creation was purely for merit-making—to distribute as morale boosters to devotees who came to pay respects and make merit at the temple, completely devoid of commercialization.
Materials The most outstanding feature of this Phra Pidta edition is the use of “Nuea Mekkapat” (Mekkapat material), which is considered a sacred and mystical alchemical metal born from ancient metallurgical magic. Smelting Mekkapat is highly complex; it requires various metals such as lead and copper, mixed with sulfur and various medicinal herbs. The person conducting the smelting ceremony must continuously chant specific mantras until all the elements melt and fuse perfectly together. The resulting metal is a dark, bluish-black substance that is naturally glossy but quite brittle, similar to glass. Ancient masters believed that Mekkapat is a “Thon Sit” material, meaning it holds intrinsic supernatural power and holiness even before being consecrated. It is highly renowned for its ability to absorb bad luck, protect against black magic, and deflect evil forces away from the wearer.
Rituals The consecration and empowerment ritual for the 1974 Mekkapat Phra Pidta strictly followed the authentic style of the Dhammayut Forest Tradition. There were no loud, chaotic blessing ceremonies or festive celebrations. Instead, Luang Pu Onn brought all the amulets into his living quarters (Kuti) and performed solo meditative consecration (Nang Prok) during his intense Dhamma practice. With the strong and pure mental power of an enlightened noble monk (Arahant), he radiated loving-kindness (Metta) and infused the amulets with deep, tranquil currents of Dhamma energy. Amulets from the Forest Tradition are thus filled with pure, clean energy, emphasizing powers derived from highly advanced meditative states rather than just the reciting of incantations.
Experiences The miraculous experiences of those who wear the 1974 Mekkapat Phra Pidta of Luang Pu Onn are widely renowned among his disciples and locals, particularly among soldiers and border patrol police who had to undertake life-threatening missions. They frequently encountered astonishing “Klaew Klaad” (evasion of danger) experiences. There were many instances where wearers faced severe armed clashes or fatal accidents, yet those wearing this Phra Pidta survived completely unharmed. Furthermore, its efficacy in “Maha Ud” (gun-stopping magic) and averting inauspicious forces is highly evident. Many believe that the Mekkapat material helps absorb misfortune on behalf of the worshipper (in some cases, during heavy accidents, the Mekkapat amulet might crack or chip, which is believed to be the amulet taking the fatal blow instead of its owner). Additionally, it bestows a peaceful and tranquil mind to the wearer, a unique hallmark of sacred objects blessed by Vipassana meditation masters of the Forest Tradition.
