Rian Phra Kanthararat Wat Phra Pathomjaydee B.E.2512

History of the Creation of “Cast Coin Phra Kanthararat” Wat Phra Pathom Chedi, B.E. 2512 (1969 CE)

The cast coin Phra Kanthararat (also called Phra Kanthararath / Phra Kanthararas) is a classic sacred amulet of Wat Phra Pathom Chedi Ratchaworamahawihan, Nakhon Pathom Province, which has been one of the most popular amulets in this province since ancient times. This piece is modeled after the Buddha image in the rain-requesting posture (Phra Kanthararat), an important Buddha statue in Thai rain-making traditions, based on legends from the ancient Gandhara kingdom in India.

Overall Background of Phra Kanthararat, Wat Phra Pathom Chedi The first and most famous edition is from B.E. 2476 (during the time of Phra Dhammavarodom (Luang Pho Choti), the abbot). It was created due to severe drought in B.E. 2472. He commissioned 150 Buddha images in the rain-requesting posture, distributing them to various temples for rain-making ceremonies, and cast coins to give to devotees. The grand ceremony featured many renowned monks consecrating them (e.g., Luang Pho Phoem, Luang Pho Kong, Luang Pho Phring, etc.). The 2476 edition coins (leaf-shaped frame mould, lotus petal mould, etc.) are made of mixed metal alloy, very old and rare, with high market prices today.

Later, in B.E. 2512, Wat Phra Pathom Chedi (under subsequent abbots) created the cast Phra Kanthararat coins again as sacred objects to distribute to devotees and commemorate the sanctity of the temple’s principal image (first sermon posture), while continuing the rain-making and blessing traditions.

Characteristics of the Cast Coin Phra Kanthararat, B.E. 2512

  • Main material → Mixed metal alloy (cast brass), some pieces in copper or blackened brass
  • Mould → Mostly similar to older editions (Buddha standing or sitting on a base, sema edge/floral patterns); front depicts Phra Kanthararat in rain-requesting posture; back often features Phra Pathom Chedi (some moulds inscribed “Wat Phra Pathom Chedi B.E. 2512”)
  • Size → Round or sema-shaped coin, medium-large (approx. 3-4 cm)
  • Consecration ceremony → Major temple ceremony (some market references mention participation by contemporary monks like Luang Pho Noi Wat Thammasala, Luang Pho Ngern Wat Donyaihom, Luang Pho Tae Wat Sam-ngam), but less renowned than the 2476 edition
  • Popularity → A later edition but still revered as a temple-specific amulet from a famous site; renowned for Metta Maha Niyom (loving-kindness/popularity), rain/blessing requests, Klaew Klad (danger evasion); original sharp, clear condition pieces are moderately rare
