History and Creation Information of Jivaka Komarabhacca Medal, Wat Yuan Saphan Khao, Year 2499

Brief Biography of Luang Phor Baw Eng Luang Phor Baw Eng (or Luang Phor Baw Eng), full name Ong Saraphan Mathurasa, was a renowned guru monk of Wat Samananam Borihan, commonly known as Wat Yuan Saphan Khao (Wat Yuan Saphan Khao), Suan Maha Nak Intersection, Dusit District, Bangkok. He was a disciple of Luang Pu Den Hon Ikesaro and a Dharma friend of Luang Phor Ophasi and Ajarn Chum Chai Kiri. He was highly skilled in magical knowledge, particularly in invoking spirits, healing illnesses, and creating powerful amulets. He was the first in Thailand to create the Jivaka Komarabhacca medal. He became famous for rituals invoking the spirit of Jivaka Komarabhacca (the ancient physician who treated the Buddha) to possess mediums for healing diseases and giving blessings. He passed away sometime after B.E. 2500 (some sources vary slightly on the exact year).

Creation Details of Jivaka Komarabhacca Medal, Year 2499 The Jivaka Komarabhacca medal from Wat Yuan Saphan Khao, B.E. 2499 (1956), is considered the first and only batch created in that year (some sources divide it into Phase 1 and Phase 2, but most regard it as one main edition). It was created as a protective and healing amulet based on the legend of Jivaka Komarabhacca, the royal physician during the Buddha’s time. The front side features an image of Jivaka Komarabhacca (usually a portrait or reverent depiction). The reverse side has yantra inscriptions or Pali/Sanskrit text. Common materials include copper, lead, tin, and alpaca. Some variations have a dot on the back or no dot, some have three-line book design on the back, or other special molds.

The creation ceremony was highly special: Luang Phor Baw Eng performed a ritual to invoke the spirit of Jivaka Komarabhacca to enter a medium (such as Pol. Lt. Col. Chalo Uthokaphan in that era) to consecrate and empower the medals directly. This gives the medal prominent blessings in healing illnesses, recovery from sickness, protection from diseases, and great charm (metta maha niyom), especially for difficult or chronic conditions. The batch was made in limited quantity, making it rare and highly sought after among collectors of healing amulets and ancient talismans.

The Jivaka Komarabhacca medal from B.E. 2499 is therefore one of the signature sacred objects of Luang Phor Baw Eng, regarded as having very high spiritual potency among disciples and devotees, particularly in the aspects of health and healing.
